VPH field sampling instructions

Container Requirements:

Sample containers: 2 x 40mL VOA vials with 15mL of methanol (initial weight noted on label) per sample location.

Procedure:

  1. Add soil to the sample container (using the calibrated syring with the end cut off), until the methanol level reaches the black line. For wet soil add slightly beyond the mark. IN NO CASE HOWEVER, MAY THE LEVEL OF SOIL IN THE CONTAINER RISE ABOVE THE LEVEL OF METHANOL.

8260(5035) field sampling instructions

Container requirements:

Sample containers: 2 x 40mL vials containing 5mL of Sodium Bisulfate and a stir bar (initial weight noted on label).

1 x 40mL vial containing 5mL of Methanol (initial weight noted on label).

2oz. sampling jar for % solids determination

Procedure:

  1. Using the T-handle device, collect approximately 5g of soil (this device is calibrated to give you this amount each time).
  2. Add 5g to each of the three vials. *
  3. Fill % solids jar.

* NOTE: Soil samples containing carbonate minerals may effervesce upon contact with the sodium bisulfate. In this case, contact the laboratory. The sodium bisulfate vials will be substituted with 2 x 40mL DI water vials with stir bars. These containers MUST be frozen within 48 hours of collection.

Do not remove or place any other label over the ones provided by the laboratory, as this will change the weight of the vial!
